A former IT student, Constantine Enriquez, took it upon himself to create the country’s first-ever public transportation schedule app.
Many bus terminals in the country operate without displaying a schedule of departing buses, leaving many commuters waiting for hours and guessing whether their bus has already departed.
If the terminal has an updated schedule, it is handwritten on a sheet of Bristol board and plastered onto the wall with tape.
Now, with the development of the bus schedule app, commuters can fully prepare their travel plans before boarding public buses.
“This idea started as a project that I had made for myself to rebuild the Department of Transport website. I went [online] to look up bus schedule information, and I stumbled upon the website, and it was a little bit dilapidated; it wasn’t being maintained. So, I thought, I had a little free time, maybe I could work on rebuilding the website, and sell it to the Department of Transport, and make a little money,” said Enriquez.
He further mentioned, “During that process, while I was rebuilding that website, I came up with this idea that, since I’m building this website, having a place where somebody could go to check the bus schedules would be an invaluable resource. So, that’s when I started on that section. I sort of completed a version one — a basic, bus schedule lookup, and then I forgot about it; but over the next few weeks, I kept getting an idea that I should pursue it. It kept coming back into my head. So that’s kind of when I started building the version that I’m working on right now.”
Enriquez holds an Associate degree in Computer Information Systems from St. John’s College Junior College and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from the University of Belize.
Enriquez said that he made numerous attempts to contact the Transport Department, but each time he was given the runaround and hit a dead end.
“I was told by the person that I spoke to – I didn’t get the chance to speak with the person I was supposed to speak with directly – that whatever was available online is what the bus schedule is; which we know is an outdated schedule floating around. Once I saw that, I knew we needed to build a better platform for Belizeans to look up bus runs in a way that’s up-to-date and easily accessible. I welcome any bus company that would like to send me their schedules so that I can take the data, add it, and make it easier for people to find their bus runs,” he said.
For now, the program is a web app, but work is being done to turn it into a full-fledged mobile app.
