Dear Editor,

Over the year the price of crude oil has dropped 25% and the price of gasoline has also followed this trend in the U.S. and Guyana. However, the price of gasoline in Guyana is still 20% higher than it is in other major oil producing locations. This has a major impact on the cost of living and fuels inflation. Our country should be able to remain competitive at the pump.

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of which the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission is a part of should investigate this matter to ensure that consumers are protected against unfair price increases. It is also important that the government look at ways to leverage its new position in the oil and gas sector so consumers may see the benefits at the pump. Other major oil producing locations have been able to accomplish this without price subsidies, and Guyana should be able to do the same. Supply chain cost savings, transportation cost savings and low gasoline taxes can help in achieving this goal.
