A recent discussion on the new plans for the administration of our airport tabled the fact that the airport was regressing in that three leaders of VCBIA Operations were 70-80+ years old. Clearly this will preempt Antigua moving onto the advanced technological platform programmed by the International Regulatory bodies to push the safety limits of air travel and avionics.

Failure to consider a global response to the urgent needs of our sole international airport before opening a fake international airport on Barbuda could soon cause double trouble as Antigua attempts to get back to Category 1 status.
Of course current issues with new aviation investment in Antigua & Barbuda and the region, which attract the attention of the International Regulatory Agencies, bring the airport and Antigua & Barbuda under the microscope.
The industry of aviation comes with strong legal boundaries, which call for precision in every area, with built in regulations and constantly improving technology which demands ongoing training. With cockpits being engineered to give pilots and ground operations a more compact connection with the new avionics and ground accommodation, agility and flexibility is a must.
As we all know, the youth and dynamic adults are now the cornerstone of new technology, as the first innovators of current air travel are moving off the stage due to age. However, Aviation culture makes use of its knowledge base by continuing to engage its members as consultants long after their physical mobility becomes impaired.
Antigua & Barbuda Airport needs new blood and an updated and modernized technology installed, if we are to compete with the international attractions in today’s world. A new(ish) terminal building without the instruments and equipment necessary to attract and serve today’s aviation demands puts a location as strategic as our island at a disadvantage.
The runway is programmed to be overlaid, but the old management tend to get bogged down in pleasing politicians, instead of getting the airport also current in policies, procedures and production.

VCBIA has been charging the same fees from the days of old, and even with the opening up of new areas of aviation & airport development, have not sought to bring the airport into the new fees regime for services rendered by the airport.
Airports generate enough capital to manage their expenses without dependence on the Treasury, or collusion in undesirable activity with operators. Properly paid Security & Police do not have to engage in violations to survive on airports; and Airport management do not have to collude with International Operators to impede local development.
Unfortunately the post colonial age group have no problem with a little bit of corruption, and continue to tolerate the remnants of past irregularities of the colonial era.
