Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez announced on Monday that the government is in talks with Frontier Airlines to operate the Antigua-San Juan route.

Last year, the government partnered with Frontier to relaunch the Orlando-Antigua route, which was the only nonstop service from Orlando to Antigua, enhancing Antigua’s presence in the Florida market.

Despite its abrupt end, negotiations have resumed as Frontier expands its services.

“They will operate a bigger aircraft, and Frontier has direct routes from various US locations, unlike Silver Airways,” said Fernandez. Silver Airways operated the San Juan-Antigua route until May, but unfavorable conditions led to its discontinuation.

Fernandez noted that other islands paid substantial amounts to maintain flights, which proved uneconomical, leading to their cessation. “We engaged with them initially because the route was important. However, when negotiations reached diminishing returns, we decided to end it,” he explained.
