Govt will not pay contractors who do sloppy work – Edghill warns

Kaieteur News- Minister of Public Works Juan Edghil has warned that the government will be withholding pay from contractors who produce poorly constructed roads.

Addressing contractors at a poorly constructed section of a road in Wisroc, Linden on Tuesday, the Minister said, “poorly done work will not be paid for. While contractors have been given timelines and deadlines, we (government) will not accept poor-quality work.”
In a press statement from the Ministry, it was noted that while 95 per cent of the projects have been completed to a high standard, the Ministry has always been proactive in identifying and addressing the five per cent of projects where issues occasionally arise.
Additionally, the Minister stated that contractors who allow poor work to be done will not be afforded a second opportunity. “Nobody who does poor quality work should come back and ask for another contract. Everybody is getting opportunities [and] we have to deliver high-quality work,” Edghill asserted.
Moreover, during a live Facebook video, the Minister stressed that contractors will face dire consequences if they produce poor work.
He explained that all concrete roads must meet pounds per square inch absolute (PSIA) of 4500, and these roads undergo testing by government labs before full payments are made.
The Public Works Minister made it clear that engineers who approve low-quality work will face consequences, as the Ministry is committed to ensuring compliance, value for money, and the delivery of proper government services to the people.
The Minister also highlighted concerns raised by residents during a recent engagement, where some roads had become too high, and access to yards had not been restored.
“In the contract, restoring people’s access is a part of that and contractors who don’t restore people’s access, we will take it from your contract sum and we give it to somebody else to get it fix because we are not doing these roads so that people can make money, we are doing these roads so the beneficiaries, which are the people, benefit from,” Edghill said.
