Guyana is punching above its weight

The visit to Guyana by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has further enhanced Guyana’s strategic and geo-political significance not only in the region, but in the world at large. As pointed out by Mr. Rubio, the fact that the visit comes mere weeks into the life of the new Trump administration is significant in its own right.
As an emerging player on the global stage, with significant foreign direct investments, particularly in the oil and gas sector, Guyana is now a major player on the international stage. Its membership on the United Nations Security Council has given it a voice on matters of global significance. Guyana is certainly punching, as it were, above its weight on critical global issues such as climate change, food and energy security and world peace.
All of this bodes well for the country, especially in the context of Venezuela’s vexatious and unfounded claim to two-thirds of the country’s territory. With strong support from the international community including that of the United States, Guyana is in a good position to confront Venezuela’s aggression.
It is significant that both Guyana and the United States have agreed to work together to strengthen economic and security ties, which are so critical at this time in the face of provocative actions by Venezuela. The support of the United States in safeguarding the interests of Guyana against Venezuelan aggression is indeed reassuring. According to Mr. Rubio, ‘it would be a bad day’ for Venezuela if it were to attack Guyana or ExxonMobil, which is drilling oil in Guyana’s territorial and maritime boundaries. President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, on his part, has reaffirmed the friendship and the mutually beneficial relationship between Guyana and the United States which will no doubt be further strengthened with this recent visit.
