Guyanese Men and Women got off to flying start at PAHF Challenge in Barbados

Kaieteur Sports- Guyana’s junior men’s and women’s hockey teams made a bold statement as they opened their Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Challenge campaigns with emphatic wins on Saturday in Barbados.

The women’s side dominated Guatemala with a stunning 4-0 victory, while the men’s team battled their way to a gritty 2-0 win over their Guatemalan counterparts.
The first women’s match of the tournament, saw Guyana impose their authority early, using their experience in 11-a-side hockey to full effect. The tone was set in the 7th minute when Georgiana Fernandes slotted home a field goal to put her team ahead.
Before halftime, Kazaquah Uzzi capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity, doubling the lead and tightening Guyana’s grip on the match. The second half saw more of the same dominance, as Fernandes struck again to complete her brace before Keitanna Percival sealed the 4-0 win.
The men’s team faced a well-drilled Guatemalan squad in one of the day’s most hard-fought contests. Despite numerous attacking threats in the first two quarters, Guyana struggled to find the breakthrough.
That changed just seconds before halftime when Jabari Lovell converted a crucial penalty corner to send his team into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Guyana maintained their intensity in the second half, and it paid off early in the third quarter. Lovell once again stepped up from a penalty corner to net his second goal, giving his team a vital 2-0 cushion. Guatemala pushed for a response, but Guyana’s defence held firm to secure an important opening win.
With momentum on their side, the Guyanese women now face a tough test against a red-hot Mexico team that stormed past Trinidad & Tobago with an 8-0 drubbing in their opener.
The men will enjoy a well-earned rest before their second match against Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow at 2:00 pm, where they aim to build on their solid start.
As the tournament progresses towards its business end next Sunday, Guyana’s hockey hopefuls will look to maintain their winning ways and make a lasting impact on the regional stage.
