In a powerful show of unity and purpose, Halo Foundation Gen-Y, the youth arm of the Halo Foundation, Scrub Life Cares, and the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda (NYPAAB) joined forces to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child. This collaboration, which took place in mid-October, aimed to address critical health and wellness issues affecting young girls, with a focus on menstrual health, body awareness, and self-empowerment.

Halo Gen-Y, which is dedicated to community development, works tirelessly to promote humanitarianism, healthy lifestyle habits, and a culture of non-violence and peace. Their efforts to nurture a generation of young people committed to social change were central to the success of this partnership.

Founded by Tanya Ambrose, Scrub Life Cares is a nonprofit organization, focused on promoting menstrual equity, reproductive health, and empowering women and youth in underserved communities. The organization seeks to eliminate period poverty and reduce stigma surrounding menstrual health, ensuring that every individual has the tools and knowledge to live a healthy life.

The National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda (NYPAAB) is steadfast in its commitment to addressing the most pressing challenges faced by young people in the country. Focused on empowering youth through education and advocacy, NYPAAB is also dedicated to dismantling barriers related to health, hygiene, and social stigma, particularly around menstruation.

The collaborative event brought together experts, activists, and young people to air crucial issues such as consent, body autonomy and confidence building. Led by Dr. Sherida Philip, Scrub Life Cares Director of Health and Education and Alesha James, an educator in Early Childhood, the sessions provided a safe and inclusive space for young girls to engage in open discussion.

The event also included the distribution of essential items including soap, deodorant, sanitary napkins, lotion, lip gloss, toiletry pouches, and sewing kits, ensuring that attendees received both practical tools and vital knowledge.

Chrysean Jarvis, a representative from NYPAAB, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, noting that the focus extends beyond hygiene. He expressed a vision for the holistic development of youth, integrating grooming, discipline, and ethics into their educational journey. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “We are committed to shaping a future where young people, both boys and girls, are equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and character to thrive.”

According to Romancier Edwards, President of Halo Gen-Y, the event is a testament to the power of collaboration. “When we unite, our voices grow louder, our impact is stronger, and we become a formidable force for change,” she added.

This initiative underscores the importance of working together across organizations to address the pressing issues young people face today. By providing access to education, resources, and support, Halo Gen-Y, Scrub Life Cares, and NYPAAB are collectively ensuring a brighter, more equitable future for youth.
