High Court hosts third open day at Vigilance

Kaieteur News- The Supreme Court of Judicature on Friday held its third open day at the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court with the objective of properly educating citizens about the court’s processes and available services.

At the event, several magistrates were present to share their knowledge with students, teachers, parents and other members of the public.
Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, in her feature remarks said the main focus was helping to guide students into careers in law and the legal system.
She said persons will benefit from the public awareness programme, since it will provide transparency within the justice system, while dispelling misconceptions of the court and its processes.
She said the programme was first launched last year in Georgetown and was taken to Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and now to the East Coast. The event will be held at least twice yearly, Justice Cummings Edwards relayed.
“This is the third of its kind and it will be conducted throughout the length and breadth of Guyana. It will help to strengthen awareness of the judicial policies and expand access to justice,” she said.

Those in attendance included Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, Senior Magistrates Sunil Scarce and Fabayo Azore, along with Magistrate Abigail Gibbs. Students from President’s College, Buxton Secondary School, Apex School, and Company Road Primary School, also attended the programme. The event saw performers from the Haslington Youth Ambassadors, the Guyana Police Force Steel Band and reigning calypso monarch sergeant Quincy Lacon.
Booths were available to allow attendees to acquire a wealth of information. The evidence booth was strictly designed for the primary school students to see how investigations are done.
