I support Jonestown being a tourist destination

Dear Editor,

I have been following, with interest, the views and opinions expressed on Jonestown in your letters column.

I am in support of Jonestown being developed and marketed as a tourist destination.  Guyana gained international spotlight because of the tragedy in Jonestown which claimed the lives of nearly a thousand people, including that of a US Congressman who was on a visit to investigate reports of inhuman treatment of United States citizens at the hands of the notorious [Jim] Jones.

Contrary to what is being projected in some sections of the media, it was not an act of ‘mass suicide’ but a case of mass murder through the forced consumption of cyanide-laced beverage by Jones and his murderous cabal.

Guyana became known on the world stage, albeit in a bizarre way because of the scale of the murders, the majority of whom were United States citizens, lured by Jones into a false sense of economic security in the interior of Guyana.

Jonestown is part of our history and should be preserved if only as a reminder of a dark period in our history.
