Dear Editor,

Despite various methods to curb cigarette smoking, many continue with the habit. To my recollection, cigarette seems to be the most heavily taxed item on the market, and despite the ridiculous increase in its prices, it’s still in demand.

Now, I find it very interesting to hear the VP Jagdeo saying that government will be tackling the gambling in communities, because it has a negative impact in society. In my opinion, the only impact it has is on casinos, thus his awake from his slumber and finds it’s a plague to society. Reading the DPI’s press release, he admitted that the casinos are more expensive and it is their people should go. So much for their plans!

Editor, because of corruption and hasty thinking, many decisions were made to allow various ventures to open in Guyana and when it got blown out of proportion, they tend to renege on their ploys with those who they are not benefiting from. Instead of a direct order to shut down, the method they prefer is via tax, which will force the operators to increase their fees which will end up being the gambler’s burden.

There are various ways to gamble online without using local agents, so my questions are, did someone concoct a way to waste money going after those small gambling agencies/apps? Are the casinos feeling the losses and forcing government to go after their competitors?

Finally Editor, much is not being said about the Guyana Lottery Company, perhaps there’s need for revaluation of its operations here. Is the company being closely monitored?

Sahadeo Bates
