DEAR EDITOR: Looking down to the ground over Coolidge Airport flight path reveals aircraft wrecks, a sobering reflection on air travel and its vicissitudes, certainly no good vibes to rise on departure.
The two wrecks have been moved from one place to another since 2016 when Bloomberg expressed amazement that we did not know how the sight of crashed or wrecked aircraft impacts pilots. The immediate response was to get the wrecks off the airport quickly, which the Airport Security stopped at the gate for no good reason. The aircraft were then hidden, so that on Bloomberg’s return the global banker was happily surprised at the quick action.
Now with many pilots around and flying overhead, the wreckage is once more visible and quite insensitive to those in the air. High on the vacant land on RWY10 are the wrecked aircraft, again reminding pilots of the risk involved in their profession.
VCBIA happens to be the most strategic location in the northern end of the Eastern Caribbean chain, but like everything Antiguan, its real treasures are not acclaimed within its Government structure. It was clear that we were ignorant about airport lands, when Antigua sold the historic aviation peninsular to an American, who used the property to establish the most widespread money laundering operation, over 113 countries worldwide. We still have a lot to learn about Aviation, and not just the mundane daily tasks around an airport.
Strategic airports are serious revenue earners, and instead of Government bailing out or building up the airport, always digging into the public purse, or drowning the country in debt for decades, these airports logistics are pure gold if run as a high-value business operation.
