DEAR EDITOR:
Antigua’s Airport Security carried out an operation to prove the weakest gate to the secure and restricted zone of the VCBIA, even producing a video of the gate and its vulnerability. It follows that is the very gate which ABAA outsources to a private security firm. The area of the gate is quite remote and closes early, thereby removing all security from the remote and underlit area, which parks billions of dollar aircraft.
Additionally, a recent decision to finally take over the Cargo Warehouse which had been authorized by Cabinet to be controlled by airport management since 2021, seems to have now taken place, without Customs involvement. Thus it happened, ABAA barging in, changing the locks and returning the keys to whomever they choose, rather than having a proper handover with Customs involvement.

The contempt being metered out by Antigua’s imports from the more developed islands reminds us of the comment of one Prime Minister, “One from ten is naught.” The refusal to humble oneself in receiving a position denied in their own country, and being employed from retirement, should bring respect and positive vibes instead of creating contention and contempt.
The time has come for Antigua to realize its aviation importance as the most strategic location in the Eastern Caribbean chain of islands, and act accordingly. It is an important historical note, that the great USA chose the colony of Antigua, to establish its Military & Airforce base to protect their backyard entrance to their America.
VCBIA needs an overhaul by a competent team of experts, bringing our fairly new, but dysfunctional airport into the new technological program for strategic airports in the world. The job requires teamwork and serious active leadership at the executive level, where bright Antiguans are pulled into a learning environment which encourages futuristic growth.
Persons pulled from the dawn of our aviation development, are no longer equipped to offer any real value in this changing world of global aerospace.
Drones and other means of transport of goods, services and people, require young brains and the physical ability to learn and move quickly, creating a busy financially viable workspace equipped for future aviators.
Jamaica & Barbados have had help from Canada and Mexico getting their airports on track in the modern world, Trinidad has had the establishment of ‘Britain’s Worst Investment Abroad”(BWIA) early, and has grown its Aviation through the the islands, with help especially from the touristic islands of the Eastern Caribbean.

Antigua now needs help, not from homegrown retired aviators of the immediate past era, but from expert authorities, with the technology of the future now being laid out by ICAO and IATA, and, recognizing the logistical importance of Antigua as a strategic partner in Caribbean Aviation.
