DEAR EDITOR:
Recently we heard the Air Traffic Controllers complain about their back pay and their pay levels on the whole, threatening the prolific tourist season which the hardworking Tourism experts project.
There needs to be a conscience for the people who make things happen on this island, and their input needs to be respected and rewarded. Air Traffic Controllers work cannot be done by anyone but a certified and authorized Controller, and for the past years up to now we have had a personnel shortage, and a failure to keep up the training and certification of ALL who operate in the Air Traffic Control Tower.

The next level which Aviation hold as an imperative is Safety & Security, a department that has been in a state of flux for years as that department has run afoul of International Rules & Regulations, and replaced them with personal opinions and self-enrichment schemes.
Normalization of wrongdoing has a way of sudden exposure of a small tentacle, ultimately surfacing all that has remained hidden. It is reported that this sudden exposure of unexplained Security Breaches and violations caused the sudden departure of a high ranking Airport official, thereby burying the filth and facilitation which has endured during his tenure.
Additionally the low morale of the Airport Security under the Director is followed by the failure of the Authority to raise their salaries and pay their back pay. More trouble in a most important mission, Safety & Security.
The last four months of new management has achieved little more than lip service at meetings which achieve little for the workers in a Labour Government or for the business of the airport either. Without disrespecting those who have the job of managing, they have to recognize the job required is beyond them and honestly tell the Government that they need an international team of consultants, not a retired aviation educator.
We need her too, to help develop the aviators which ICAO & IATA have advised, must NOW be grown to operate within the new technology being introduced over the next ten years in aircraft Manufacturing, Maintenance and Services.
If the Minister is not briefed seriously by qualified persons in the know, he will continue to feel that Aviation is Tourism, which a smile and good customer service can fix in an instant.

The Ministry of Aviation does not exist or operate like any other Ministry, with its senior people not talking to each other, dumped in and unattractive Utilities building with workman atmosphere, where they breathe mold for half day for nearly 18 months now.
Nothing like Tourism with its experts and clean and official Ministries and Tourism Directorate full of busy personnel, happy in their work, nothing like VCBIA, where chaos reigns, and no one is in charge and officers take responsibility onto themselves and do as they please, often to benefit themselves!
