HomeCARIBBEAN NEWSLETTER: Our government must not form alliances with criminals and gangs
spot_imgspot_img

DEAR EDITOR:

The prime minister’s comments, asking gang members to discard weapons that have been used to hurt others, is alarming. He should insist that such persons be punished – not hide the evidence. He also wants to form an alliance with [Name Withheld]. How can he do this, when [Name Withheld] said he should be shot?

Why is Jamaica consistently in the top 10 countries in the world for its murder rate? Why is Haiti suffering from gang violence? Decades ago, political leaders from both countries formed alliances with gangs. Some say that in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, politicians have also formed alliances with gangs. St Kitts and Nevis has seen its murder rate surpass Jamaica’s on more than one occasion.

Evil people must be rooted out and punished, not cradled. Woe is us!
