Internal tensions within the United Progressive Party (UPP) have escalated in recent weeks, as factional infighting and strategic maneuvering dominate its ranks. While several high-profile resignations, all of which we have told you about, have come to pass, the premature disclosure of Senator Shawn Nicholas’s intended departure inadvertently allowed her partner, Harold Lovell, sufficient time to persuade her to remain. Despite credible reports that she had threatened to step down, Nicholas has now decided to stay, positioning herself as a pivotal figure in resisting attempts by party leaders, D. Gisele Isaac and Jamale Pringle, to replace her with Pearl Quin in the Senate.

For the next 90 days, Nicholas is expected to covertly undermine Pringle and Gisele, stoking further internal dissent and potentially catalyzing additional resignations. Her ultimate goal appears to be the return of Lovell to party leadership, a move anticipated by some insiders as crucial to shifting the UPP’s direction. Lovell, who has recently confided in close associates in Toronto, hinted at an imminent upheaval within the party, forecasting a wave of resignations that could clear the path for his own resurgence.
Gisele, however, remains adamantly opposed to Lovell’s return, attributing the party’s previous electoral defeats to his leadership failures. She asserts that under her and Pringle’s stewardship, the UPP came within six votes of victory, and if not for Lovell’s missteps, they would be in government today. Together with Pringle, Gisele is now orchestrating a plan to introduce ten new candidates, each of whom would be firmly aligned with their leadership, thereby consolidating their control over the party.
Key figures such as Alex Browne, Kelvin Shuggy Simon, and Richard Lewis are reportedly at risk of being sidelined in this reshuffle. Initially, Sean Bird was also slated for replacement by Ashworth Azille, but following his recent public declaration of intent to leave the UPP peacefully, the leadership is now awaiting his formal resignation. As a matter of fact, top leader of the party such as Giselle, Chaku and Justin Simon continue to refer to Sean Bird as a “ABLP flip-flopper”, while also hinting that “no Bird labourite is welcomed in any leadership role in the UPP”.
Algernon Serpent Watts, meanwhile, will be tactically ignored in an effort to retain the support of the Observer media network, though there are internal beliefs that Serpent will ultimately lose his seat due to electoral dynamics. Despite this, the leadership has devised a strategy to deprive Serpent of critical funding, further weakening his position.
A source within the party’s executive has expressed frustration over this approach, arguing that if Gisele, in her capacity as chairperson, had managed campaign funds more effectively, the UPP would have won the 2023 election. The source went so far as to describe Gisele as the “sore foot” of the UPP, implying that her removal is necessary to preserve the party’s future.
As the internal power struggle unfolds, Senator Sean Nicholas remains resolute, refusing to vacate her senatorial post. Instead, she is expected to quietly rally support for additional resignations, all with the ultimate aim of dislodging Gisele and Pringle from leadership. The coming months will likely be decisive for the UPP, as its leaders grapple with a deepening crisis of cohesion and direction.
