The following was first published in the Daily Observer on July 30, 2020:
After serving the rich, famous and the royals for twenty-five years, the one thing I know about them is their love of harmony on their vacation islands. If Central Government and the Barbuda Council continue to knock heads with threats of jailing elected officers of the people of Barbuda to protect investors, we will surely witness the most expensive white elephant of magnificent unoccupied mansions on the island of Barbuda.
In the first place the XL (extra large) investment in Barbuda does not even have the courtesy to hold village meetings to develop a relationship with the people. With the power of Antigua, the developers have just barged into almost sacred protected areas of this fragile coral islet clearing land as they please and treating elected officials of the Barbuda Council with benign contempt.
Prior to the arrival of these new men on the ground, old members of the Stanford guard stood their ground in diverting questions and requests for plans, so now that the baton is in the hands of serious white men who are prepared to defend ‘their’ land, the true character of the Barbuda people is exploding! The optics will be white superiority with Government backing against the poor black people of this little hurricane swept island of the Eastern Caribbean, Barbuda.
Clearly, these people who are developing in Barbuda were given the impression that they were inheriting an uninhabited island like Jumby Bay, when you consider that Barbudans were being held against their will in Antigua after the hurricane. The behavior of the developers in these times is like a throwback to colonial times when the boundaries of the estate caught many a local trespasser taking a short cut.
Barbudans treasure their little island and had agreed with Sir Lester Bird and reconfirmed with Hon. Baldwin Spencer that small ultra-high end properties at the level and size of Coco Point and the K-Club was the way to go in Tourism development for Barbuda. Sustainable development ensured the people would grow with the investment thereby protecting the unique Barbuda culture and community land ownership.

Four hundred rich mansions in Barbuda can only reduce the Barbudans to little more than the days of Codrington, where they are sure to have ‘jabs’ as chamber-maids, waiters, gardeners serving those who hanker after the days of empire, and privilege! That sort of development is bad for a small coral island with Eco-fragility, below sea level, and with a people prepared to die in defense of their island for themselves.
Maybe the time has really come for the islands to part ways, like Anguilla had to break with St. Kitts-Nevis; maybe a federal unit like St. Kitts and Nevis is the answer, because all Caribbean island people know every island grows its own people, and there are not any Antigua-Barbuda people.
