Kaieteur News- A 53-year-old man was, on Thursday, killed when a tree fell while he was working in a mining pit at Kumung Kumung Backdam, Region Seven, trapping him.

The dead man has been identified as Oscar King, who resided at Kumung Kumung Backdam, Puruni River. Police reported that the incident occurred between 16:00h and 17:00h.

King was employed by Paul Holder, a 53-year-old gold miner from 767 Parika Highway, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). Holder is the owner of a land dredge at Kumung Kumung, Backdam where King and four other employees worked.

Investigations revealed that prior to the incident, King and his co-workers were working in a mining pit measuring 40 feet in width by 60 feet in length by 8 feet in depth.

While working the jet, the southern side of the pit collapsed, causing a tree to fall and trap King, who was buried in mud.

His co-workers dug him out, but he was motionless. Police were informed and upon arrival transported King to the Puruni Health Post where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The miner’s body was taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital where it awaits a post-mortem examination. “Statements have been taken, and the investigation is ongoing,” Police reported.
