Man found dead slumped over boat at Wakapoa

Villagers surround the boat which Archelous Hendrick’s body was found slumped over

Kaieteur News – A pensioner was found dead on Tuesday morning, slumped over his canoe at Wakapao, Moruca district, Region One.
The dead man was identified as Archelous Hendricks of Hassacobra- a little island located along the Moruca River.

Speaking with Kaieteur News, Wakapoa’s Toshao, Andre Mohabir, said that Hendricks is believed to be around 69 years old.
The pensioner reportedly left his home on Monday and paddled his canoe to Mora Settlement to visit his relatives. However, he did not return home.

His wife reportedly said that sometimes he would spend a while, but when he did not return to his home, she became worried. Unfortunately, she did not have a boat within her reach to search for her husband.

However, on Tuesday morning, when she looked out of her home, she saw her husband’s boat a short distance away, stuck in weeds in the river. She subsequently got access to a boat and travelled to check on her husband.

She reported that as she got closer, she discovered her husband dead.

An alarm was raised, and other villagers, including the Toshao Mohabir, ventured to the area where Hendrick’s body was found.
“Part of his body was in the boat and part was in the water,” Toshao Mohabir told Kaieteur News, adding that the canoe was stuck in the grass and could not move.

Villagers recalled that his cell phone was right next to him and was ringing when they arrived. It is unclear how Hendricks died, but it is believed that he drowned.
