Man who broke into Housing Annex, remanded on several charges

Kaieteur News- Thirty-nine-year-old Devon Hubbert, who allegedly broke into the Ministry of Housing Annex, was remanded on Wednesday on several other break and enter charges when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Hubbert, of Lot 91 Garnett Street, Campbellville, made his appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty. He was charged for allegedly attempting to commit a felony, breaking and entering with larceny, and breaking and entering with intent. He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and begged the magistrate for leniency, asking for “a small bail.”
It is alleged that on or between March 1 and March 4, 2025 at Lot 37 Croal and Camp Streets, Georgetown, Hubbert allegedly broke entered I and J Reflections Salon and stole six pairs of brand name sneakers valued at $100,000, a Visio wireless surround system valued at $90,000, a Baby Bliss flat iron valued $52,000 and a Kertin bonding iron valued $28,000; total value: $270,000, property of Laurice Collmore.
It is also alleged that he broke into Guyana Gaming Authority and stole a case of Fruta juice valued at $4,500, a spray can valued at $18,000, three bales of Bounty tissue valued at $25,000 and a quantity of stationaries valued $20,000. The third charge alleged that Hubbert broke and entered the Ministry of Housing Annex with intent to steal, on or between March 2, and March 3, 2025 at United Nations Place, Croal Street, Georgetown. The final charge alleged that the defendant attempted to break and enter a salon belonging to Abehola Prince with intent to steal, on or between February 27 and March 1, 2025 at Chalmers Place and Brickdam, Georgetown.
In his address to the court, Hubbert said that he was assaulted by police when he was arrested. He stated that they shackled him to the police van on Camp Street and drove off with him, causing him to sustain severe injures about his body. The prosecution told the court that the defendant is no stranger to the police since he was charged in 2017, 2018 and 2021 for similar offences and was recently released from prison. They added that there is CCTV footage of the defendant committing all four offences. They stated that when the defendant was arrested, he already had marks about his body. Magistrate McGusty remanded the defendant to prison and the matter was adjourned to April 23, 2025.
