McDonald leads nominations for President of GTU

Kaieteur News- The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has announced the list of candidates who have officially accepted their nominations and will be contesting in the upcoming elections. According to the list released by the GTU, Coretta McDonald is the single nominee for the position of President of the GTU.

McDonald who holds the position as General Secretary of the GTU is vying for the President of the union months after a High Court judge ruled that she can for the post.
Present General Secretary of the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) Coretta McDonald is the only nominee who has accepted the nomination to run for the presidency of the union.
In an interview with this publication, she disclosed that there were three other persons who were nominated: Sir Martin Samaroo from Essequibo, Collis Nicholson and Julian Cambridge but she was the only person who accepted. The election will be conducted using the postal ballot method. Teachers will have one month to receive their ballot and cast their votes.
According to the information posted via the GTU’s Facebook, Mariska Williams and Andy Cameron are in contest for the post of 1st Vice President; Mariska Williams, Karl Vanier, Raywattie Persaud , Ronald Cox and Andrew Dhanraj are vying for 2nd Vice President; Imran Ally and Collis Nicholson are in contest to be General Secretary ; Heathcliff Peters , Wykieta Stoute and Tiffani Hinds are nominated to contest for Deputy General Secretary; Roxane St. Hill, Raelene Phillips are in contest for Treasurer; Mehalai McAlmont , Imran Ally are listed as the nominees for Regional Vice President Berbice; Randy Mingo, Kenisha Headley and Fanica Lewis are in contest for Regional Vice-President Demerara; and Rabindranauth Boodram and Thakurdeen Durga are listed for Regional Vice President Essequibo.
In a brief statement accompanying the list of nominees, the GTU noted the dedicated individuals have stepped forward to serve the teaching fraternity with commitment, transparency, and a vision for progress.
“We commend them for their courage and willingness to lead, and we encourage all members to stay engaged in the electoral process. Let us continue to strengthen our union by supporting a free, fair, and democratic election,” the statement concluded.
