NEW YORK TIMES: A start-up claimed its device could care cancer patients. Then patients began dying.

You can tell media literacy is low nowadays by how many people are willing to follow rich people to islands to participate in their unregulated scientific experiments. It’s like people have never watched or read The Island of Doctor Moreau or played Bioshock. Sadly, it’s what a lot of people stricken with cancer did after putting their faith in a billionaire and his snake oil.

According to this lengthy and at times jaw-dropping New York Times feature, billionaire Alan Quasha allegedly learned about a medical device called ExThera. The blood-filtering machine was designed to treat severe cases of COVID-19. It rose to prominence during the pandemic, but the company wondered if its technology could be applied to any other illness. READ COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE.

SCIENCE: Killing Cancer Patients (Once the Payments Clear)

I was horrified by this article in the New York Times from John Carryerou (the reporter who broke the Theranos story). It’s another shady-medical-device story, but this one, for better or worse, is not as off-the-charts crazy as Theranos. But it has more actionable lessons, I think. The Theranos scandal had takeaways like “Consider the possibility that the charismatic young founder of this hot company might have been lying about absolutely everything from Day One, over and over in every possible media venue”.
