Only trucks, public transportation to use Grove to Good Success main road: Minister Edghill

Kaieteur News – Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has advised that only trucks and public transportation would be allowed to use the East Bank of Demerara corridor stretching from Diamond/Grove to Good Success.
The advisory, which takes effect from June 17, comes as that section of the main road is currently under major construction.
According to information provided by the ministry, Minister Edghill, alongside traffic chief, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh, and head of the special projects’ unit of the public works ministry, Mr. Colin Gittens, and other staff, visited the project site where the new traffic diversions were announced.
The ministry, in a release, said, “To facilitate the smooth implementation of the works and to minimise traffic disruption, a temporary bypass route was initially established. This bypass was designed to accommodate light vehicles such as cars and pickups, while heavier vehicles, including trucks and lorries, were to remain on the main carriageway through the active work zone.”

The ministry noted that although all classes of vehicles are permitted to use the public road, light vehicles are encouraged to utilise the bypass road, which may provide an easier and more efficient route for their passage.
Heavy vehicles, due to structural and safety considerations, are not permitted to use the bypass and must continue to traverse the main road.
“The Ministry of Public Works urges all motorists to exercise caution when passing through the construction zone, adhere to all traffic signage and directions from flag personnel, and reduce speed for the safety of workers and fellow road users,” the ministry added.
Looking to have this project completed in a timely and safe manner, the ministry is urging all road users to comply with the traffic advisories in place. The Guyana Police Force’s traffic department will also be on the roadways to ensure a smooth traffic flow.
The ministry had noted previously that the East Bank thoroughfare has endured significant stress, resulting from both the volume of vehicular traffic, as well as the weight of trucks, and both articulated and non-articulated vehicles.
Kaieteur News understands that the $1.3 billion road project is being financed by the Government of Guyana and forms part of the wider rehabilitation project of the East Bank roadway. It was reported that the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is financing the upgrade of the East Bank of Demerara roadway from Good Success to Timehri.
