More than 27 individuals who have worked in the public sector for over 35 years were honored on Thursday, September 25, as they received a star at the Walk of Recognition and Inspiration in Belmopan.
“It’s not about recognizing these long-serving public officers, but it’s also about being inspired by their stories, being inspired by the legacies that they have created, being inspired by the service that they have provided to the people and nation of Belize,” said Hon. Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service.
He went on, “I always say that they couldn’t have done it alone, but it is because they had supportive families and a deep love for their country, and a desire to serve the public. So, I want to say congratulations to them.”
The recognition first began in 2020, replacing its traditional Public Service Awards Gala during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the partnership of the Belmopan City Council.
The Walk of Recognition and Inspiration is situated on the sidewalk between the Angelus Press and the Belize Bank on the west side of the Ring Road, leading up to the stairs of the National Assembly building.
As mentioned above, the awards are given to persons who have served for over 35 years in the public space, and Usher noted that to the new faces, the award may seem unattainable, but it’s all about providing the highest level of professionalism and service.
“It seems like a long time indeed, but certainly it’s about that dedication to their profession and commitment to service. Someone said that most people stay four or five years at a job. These dedicated public officers have been here for over 35 years, providing quality and honorable service at the highest level. It’s rare, but 27 new inductees, so we still have something good going on,” he noted.
