The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) will host its 61st Directing Council which convened yesterday in Washington,DC until October 4, has brought together high-level health authorities from across the Americas.
This pivotal gathering will shape regional health priorities and strategies for the coming years. The opening ceremony, scheduled for Monday, September 30, will feature prominent figures in global health, including the outgoing President of the Directing Council; and PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa.
Appearances will include WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Throughout the week, delegates will engage in critical discussions and decision-making processes on a range of pressing health issues.
Key topics on the agenda include strengthening tobacco control measures, enhancing early warning systems for health emergencies through improved epidemic intelligence, and bolstering the health sector’s resilience against climate change-related threats.
The council will also address vital matters such as sepsis management, health information systems modernisation, long-term care strategies, and improvements in surgical, intensive, and emergency care services. A significant focus will be placed on accelerating the transformation of health systems to meet evolving regional needs.
In a forward-looking move, the council will review a roadmap for the development of PAHO’s Strategic Plan 2026-2031. This crucial document, set for approval in 2025, will outline the organisation’s strategic direction and collective priorities for the latter half of the decade.
Delegates will receive final reports on several ongoing initiatives, including the 2018-2023 entomology and vector control action plan and efforts to sustain the elimination of measles, rubella, and congenital rubella syndrome.
Progress updates will cover topics such as reducing disparities in healthcare access for LGBT+ communities and advancing the digital transformation of the health sector.
The council’s agenda extends beyond formal sessions, featuring special events and briefings. These include discussions on PAHO’s Elimination Initiative, telemedicine advancements, and the ongoing negotiations for a global pandemic agreement. A celebration of the Americas’ contributions to a sustainable WHO is also planned.
In recognition of excellence in the field, the PAHO Award for Management and Leadership in Health Services 2024 will be presented on October 1, honouring outstanding contributions to regional healthcare.
The event kicked off with the 20th “Walk for Health” on September 29, emphasising the importance of physical and mental well-being – a fitting start to a week focused on advancing public health across the Americas.
As health challenges continue to evolve rapidly, the outcomes of this council meeting are expected to have far-reaching implications for health policies and practices throughout the region.
The collaborative efforts and decisions made during this week-long assembly will play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare in the Americas, addressing both long-standing issues and emerging threats to public health.
