Kaieteur Sports – The much-anticipated sixth Annual ExxonMobil Boys’ and Girls’ Schools Under-14 Football Championship has been postponed, with organisers now confirming a revised kickoff date of Saturday, June 21.
In a statement released earlier this week, tournament coordinator PETRA Organisation expressed sincere regret over the delay, citing “unfavourable surface ground and weather conditions” as the primary reasons for the rescheduling.
“Due to circumstances outside of our control, we are forced to postpone the opening and march-past ceremony as well as the first set of matches,” the release stated. “We regret any inconvenience caused.”
The tournament, which was originally scheduled to begin today, was expected to bring together 52 teams including 32 boys and 24 girls teams from schools across nine regions, all vying for ultimate Schools Under-14 football supremacy. Now, teams and players will receive an additional week to fine-tune their preparations for what is considered the premier youth football challenge in Guyana.
Despite the delay, ExxonMobil remains firmly on board as the title sponsor for yet another year, with the championship also enjoying strong support from Stena Drilling, Demerara Mutual, I-Cee Soft Drink, MVP Sports, Sky-Tec, and key government ministries including the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
Meanwhile, the PETRA Organisation has assured all that every effort is being made to ensure a smooth and safe start to what promises to be an exhilarating tournament.
The countdown to June 21 is now officially on, as the ExxonMobil U14 Football Championship prepares to kick off with even greater anticipation.
