Poor road works at De Hoop

Dear Editor,

The government of Guyana must be commended for the work that is being done to improve the road network across the country, especially the farm-to-market access roads.

The De Hoop community is one of the fortunate communities to benefit from this wonderful initiative. Sadly, however, two contractors who were awarded different sections of the De Hoop Branch Road to rehabilitate have caused much dissatisfaction among the local populace.

It was quite evident that shoddy work was done by the first contractor who completed his section last year.

On completion of the paving of the road, it was immediately noticeable that the entire section was very wavy, and as was expected, in less than two months, some areas started to sink.

When the other contractor commenced work on the second section of the road, even though apprehensive, residents were hopeful that the work would be completed in a timely manner and that the quality of work would be better than that done by the first contractor.

Unfortunately, even though work would have started several months ago, not a lot has been achieved. In fact, this contractor dug up the old asphalt on the road, leaving it in a very rough state, covered in potholes, and has not done any further work since then. It is now a nightmare for residents to drive on this section of the road since it is causing severe damage to the suspension parts of their vehicles. In addition, the residents are in the middle of the rice harvesting season and trucks have to transport paddy along this very road in its current state.

Given the foregoing, I am kindly requesting that the Honourable Minister of Public Works visit the De Hoop community and address this issue with the contractor, since the people are very angry and it could escalate to something more serious.

With regards.
Yours sincerely,
J. Panchu.
