Dr. Ralph Gonzalves, the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has publicly denounced the decision to allocate EC$22 million for the construction of an official residence for Timothy Antonine, the Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB).

In a letter to Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Browne, the current chairman of the ECCU Monetary Council, Gonzalves expressed his outrage over what he considers an “absolute scandal.”
The prime minister highlighted that the financial burden of such a lavish expenditure is placed on the poor and working-class individuals in the region.
“The unelected Levites and Mandarins have gone stark mad!” Gonzalves stated, emphasizing his shock and anger at the timing of this decision. He pointed out that while many citizens are suffering from rising food prices and increasing poverty, resources are being allocated for a lavish 10,000-square-foot mansion.
Gonzalves’s remarks resonate with growing concerns regarding the financial priorities of the ECCB, particularly in a moment when member countries of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) are facing significant economic challenges.
