– urge GECOM to cater for persons with disabilities, boost voter education
Kaieteur News – The Private Sector Commission (PSC) and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) have commended Guyanese for what the organisations described as “one of the most efficient and peaceful elections our nation has ever experienced.”
In a press release on Wednesday, the PSC also commended the Guyana Elections Commission for the efficiency, accuracy, and transparency with which the process was managed.
“The timely posting of results and information online for the public to view in real time has set a strong standard for openness and accountability,” the PSC said.
According to the PSC, throughout the entire elections period, both international and local observer missions consistently reported that the process went smoothly and without incident. “Observers also witnessed that the majority of polling stations had representatives from the PPP, APNU, and WIN. The professionalism and diligence shown by these party agents, while representing their respective interests, was phenomenal and contributed to the smooth conduct of voting and counting.” “We take this opportunity to commend the people of Guyana for the maturity and patience demonstrated throughout the electoral process, as well as the political leaders for exercising responsibility, leadership, and respect for the rule of law. Together, we have shown the world that democracy in Guyana is strong and secure,” the PSC statement concluded.
For their part, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) also commended Guyana’s electorate on a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent polling day, “that displayed maturity and stability during this crucial democratic process.”
The Chamber also applauded GECOM for the execution of an efficient procedure that was without disruptions to the voting process. “However, the GCCI calls on GECOM to implement systems that allow people living with disabilities to comfortably access polling stations and exercise their constitutional franchise,” the statement read.
The GCCI also urges GECOM to undertake a stronger and more targeted voter education programme to ensure that all segments of the population are well-informed on how to cast their ballots. As the country awaits the declaration of results, the Chamber re-emphasises its call for timely and credible results, and a peaceful conclusion to GRE 2025.
