Queen’s College defeats Jamaica in international debate competition

Kaieteur News- The Queen’s College debating team triumphed over Jamaica at the International Reparation Debating Competition, Lictor Live, the High School’s news media club said on Friday.

Queen’s College reportedly took-on Jamaica during the second round of the competition and came out on top.
“We laud Suriya Walcott (first speaker) who was named ‘Best Speaker’ in both rounds” the media club said while adding “Alongside Suriya were Athea Allicock (second speaker) and Mahesa Boodhoo (third speaker)”
The International Reparation Debating Competition was launched by the University of West Indies’ (UWI) Centre for Reparations Research (CRR) on February 28 last.
Its aim is reportedly to engage secondary schools regionally and internationally in reparatory justice discussions.
“As debates on reparatory justice for peoples of African descent sway from conservative to liberal in orientation, there is a need for strategic intervention”, the University had stated during the launch.
UWI’s CRR added, “Most importantly, the debating competition will seek to achieve a critical facet of the CRR’s strategic plan to mainstream reparation from street to stage”.
The ongoing debate competition kicked off on March 10 and runs until April. Some 24 schools, from the Bahamas, Curaçao, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom are participating.
The debates will be streamed live on the CRR’s YouTube channel, the University said.
