Speedboat operator suspended for overcharging passengers

Kaieteur News- The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) on Friday has indefinitely suspended the captain and bowman of a vessel for overcharging passengers, who ply the Georgetown to Vreed-en-Hoop route.
Passengers were being charged $500 instead of $100 by the captain and bowman of the vessel.
MARAD, in a press statement, reminded passengers that the water taxi fare between Georgetown and Vreed-en-Hoop remains at $100 regardless of the time of the day.
“Any boat operator not adhering to the approved fare structure should be reported immediately to MARAD,” the Department said.
Meanwhile, the suspension follows the circulation of video on social media showing the captain and bowman demanding $500 from passengers. The video was posted on Moses Profitt’s Facebook page showing the captain and bowman in a heated argument with passengers about the unauthorized increase in boat fares.
The captain/bowman was heard saying, “This man (a passenger) acknowledge me when I said $500. How y’all feel y’all come in the boat?”
Another person was heard telling the frustrated passengers, “You (passengers) don’t know what is a verbal agreement? It 8 o’clock and the guard locking the gate.”
In response, a passenger said, “So $500 to cross the river? I want y’all remember y’all soliciting money from people, not say $300, you want $500.”
