Kaieteur Sports- Some magic from the Guyana Harpy Eagles spin trio of Veerasammy Permaul, Gudakesh Motie and Kevin Sinclair who shared 9 wickets, help put the Champs in a comfy position as they trail Windward Islands Volcanoes by 54-runs with 7 wickets remaining going into the third day at Providence.
Veerasammy Permaul led Guyana’s bowling effort yesterday with 4 first innings wickets.
It was a clinical, collective effort from the Harpy Eagles spinners, led by left-arm spin wizard Permaul who snared 4-55, alongside West Indies Test bowlers in Motie (3-44) and Sinclair (2-54), who spun webs around the opposition.
Fast-bowler Ronaldo Alimohamed (1-33) bowled well despite failing to add to his overnight scalp, nevertheless being instrumental in keeping the Volcanoes to 213 all out in their 1st innings.
Despite losing their top three batsmen in Raymon Perez (33), Matthew Nandu (8) and the in-form Kevlon Anderson (21) early, Guyana in reply took their first innings score to 159-3 after 42 overs by the end of the second day’s play.
Captain Tevin Imlach (40*) and his deputy Kemol Savory (46*) will be keen on adding to their current partnership of 89 runs with both batsmen eyeing landmarks after grinding out the latter of day 2 with all of today to go, should the weather hold up.
Anderson and Perez added 52 after losing Nandu, consolidating the loss before they too suffered similar fates. Their dismissals brought the pair of Imlach and Savory to the middle, as both men showed their form and class, almost reaching their fifties by the time play ended.
Earlier, overnight batsmen, Jeremy Solozano was the rock of the innings, reaching his 18th first class fifty on the morning of day 2 before going on to stroke a classy 83.
Solozano faced 148 balls and nailed 10 fours to keep his team bubbling through a rough patch following an opening day plagued by rain.
West Indies Test middle-order batsman and Volcanoes skipper Alick Athanaze dug in for his 39, but more importantly being involved in a crucial fifty partnership with Solozano.
The skipper hit four fours and a six before he was cleaned up by Sinclair. Former Test player Sunil Ambris helped stabilize the middle order with his crucial knock of 33 off 52 (4×4), being denied a possible threatening innings thanks to Permaul who trapped him LBW to get his first of four.
Spin twins Kevin Sinclair and Gudakesh Motie shared 5 wickets to help keep the Volcanoes from erupting further.
After controlling the morning session despite the resistance shown by Solozano/Athanaze/Ambris, Guyana entered the afternoon session with an aggressive mindset which was maintained by the slower bowlers.
Shadrack Descarte (15) was another Leg Before Wicket victim falling to Permaul, who won another umpire’s decision, to leave Windwards 195-5.
Guyana, keen on keeping their opponents under the 200-run mark, did eventually that thanks to the tag-team work the two left-arm spinners, as Motie joined in on the action to help his senior partner mop up the remaining Volcanoes batsmen, leaving Guyana with the remainder of day 2’s afternoon session to get themselves going.
