Dear Editor,

It’s bad enough that West Indies lost in a stunning defeat against Nepal. But now in their first test against India, they were humiliated. It was an embarrassment to the region as well as West Indies fans. At one point in the game, I found myself rooting for India purely on the basis that their cricket was top-notch, from their bowling to their batting to their fielding. Everything about the Indian team was world class.

How did India become such a solid team today? It is said that India’s talent pool is so extensive that they can fill three professional teams. I was turned on to Indian cricket with the advent of Kapil Dev. He perfected the line and length of fast bowling though the Indian team was still an average team.

However, four things stand out: India’s commitment to developing local talent and giving them exposure rather a political structure in the past. Their use of cutting-edge technology in their coaching to uncover weaknesses and correct them. Their focus on fast bowling and a mandatory fitness test. These are simple but effective techniques.

Bill Belichick won the most superbowl rings in the NFL (National Football League). His coaching style was fine-tuning the basics. It didn’t matter if his team won or lost. The next morning at six o’clock he had his team on the field going through the basics. He said it was all about the basics.

I remember when “Shell-Shield” matches were like test matches. That was how good the West Indies were. The West Indies team today is a stark contrast. Not even the commentators can agree. One is saying “they need more character” and the other is saying “It’s not about character, they need to fight”.

Maybe less dependent on the West Indies Cricket Board is needed. Maybe Guyana should have more control in the development and operation of local talent and tournaments, promoting cricket in every region and village for it to once again become a national pride.
