The PPP’s embrace of Trump’s agenda

Dear Editor,

Political parties and the government of Guyana should not be using taxpayers’ money to hire a lobbying firm to mobilise against the political opposition and advance its domestic political agenda.  This in fact is just what the PPP has done twice now, first in 2020 after the party was declared winner. It is clear that the PPP Government – President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo are fans of the Trump agenda of challenging democratic institutions and norms, sowing seeds of discontent, self-enrichment, privileging a select wealthy few and absolute domination of the major governing institutions.

Imagine if all the governments in the Caribbean were permitted by their laws to engage in lobbying firms to advance their political agenda and consolidation of power by securing favorable actions and rhetoric from Washington. Does this look and sound like a democratic society that values the will of the people and free speech? No, it looks like a society in which the government wants to remain in power, despite the will of the people and will do so at any cost, once they can get away with it.

Now, the government has invited Marco Rubio, a U.S. Senator known for overseeing deportations under Donald Trump’s administration and for defying lawful court orders. Rubio’s disregard for judicial rulings reflects contempt for the rule of law, raising serious concerns about the PPP’s motives. Inviting a figure with this record suggests the PPP’s willingness to manipulate Guyana’s electoral process, undermining democracy.

Engaging figures like Rubio and relying on foreign political influence, the PPP is signaling its intention to manipulate the democratic process and suppress opposition.
