Prime Minister Gaston Browne has poured cold water on a constitutional claim from the opposition United Progressive Party regarding Independent MP, Anthony Smith Jr.

“When comrade Smith’s appointment was made, I not only touched base with several attorneys locally including our Attorney General [Steadroy Benjamin], and Tony Astaphan,” the Prime Minister said.
“I also checked one of the most renowned regional constitutional lawyers in the region. We don’t do things by guesswork. They cannot win.”
The UPP is challenging the independence of MP Smith, given that he has been appointed to the cabinet.
The case was adjourned to November 5 when it came up in the High Court last week before Justice Jan Drysdale. Prime Minister Browne believes the opposition is wasting its time.
