GFF Elite League Season VII
Kaieteur Sports– Two weeks into Season Seven of the Elite League, teams are already making their presence felt. Ann’s Grove United Football Club, after an opening win against Mainstay Goldstar FC, suffered a setback with a loss to Santos FC. Slingerz FC started strong, securing a 3-1 victory over Monedderlust FC in their first encounter. Meanwhile, defending champions Guyana Defence Force FC were upstaged by Western Tigers FC in their opening match, sending a strong message to the competition.
Two nights, three matches! Western Tigers FC started well last weekend, they will play arch rival Fruta Conquerors FC Sunday at 9:00pm.
Newly promoted Mainstay Goldstar FC is still searching for the right formula, struggling to secure even a draw. So far, they have endured two tough losses in the 2025 season, including a humbling 10-1 defeat at the hands of Den Amstel United FC.
Every win is important at this stage. The Guyana Football Federation’s (GDF) Elite League provides clubs with the necessary CONCACAF Club licensing, granting them the opportunity to compete at the highest level. It also exposes players to potential international selections and also reignites passion for the game among local supporters.
Beyond pride and exposure, there’s a lot at stake for teams and players. The league champions will earn an automatic qualification spot in the CONCACAF/Caribbean Shield Championship, along with a substantial $2 million cash prize. The total prize pool stands at $4.5 million, with the second-place finishers receiving $1.2 million, while the third- and fourth-place teams will walk away with $800,000 and $500,000, respectively.
This weekend, fans can look forward to three high-intensity clashes. The action kicks off on Saturday at Number 5 Community Centre ground in Berbice at 3:00 PM with Monedderlust FC going up against Santos FC in match #5. Then on Sunday, the action will move to National Training Centre in Providence, Ann’s Grove United FC will battle Den Amstel United FC at 6:30 PM, followed by ‘high on confidence’ Western Tigers FC taking on Fruta Conquerors FC in a thrilling nightcap.
GFF President Wayne Forde acknowledged the growing fan turnout over the past three match days, stating, “I am pleased with what we have seen so far. The crowd has been remarkable, and it’s clear that supporters are eager to rally behind their clubs. With some of the league’s top teams set to take the field, we anticipate even greater attendance in the coming weeks.”
Forde also emphasized the competitiveness of the league, saying, “Every player here is a ‘big name’ player because this championship brings together the best from the top ten clubs. No team should be considered weak.”
