Yvonne Ambrose, an employee at Royalton Antigua and a shop steward for the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), is eagerly anticipating an exciting new educational journey. In the coming weeks, Ambrose will begin a Certificate course in Introduction to Human Resource Management with the University of the West Indies. Upon learning of her interest in the program, the ABWU readily stepped in to assist with covering the cost of the course.
Each year, the ABWU invests more than $80,000 in training and education for its members. The Union has also built a strong partnership with the Cipriani College of Labour & Cooperative Studies in Trinidad, facilitating certificate, diploma, and degree programs in disciplines such as Industrial Relations, Cooperative/Credit Union Studies, Occupational Safety and Health and Human Resource Management.

Ambrose explains that her motivation for pursuing the course is two-fold. “I wanted to familiarize myself with how the HR department operates, and I also wanted to enhance my future career prospects,” she shared.
Ambrose believes her dedication to professional development will position her for a management role in the near future. Just a few months ago, she successfully completed a certificate in Supervisory Management.
Encouraging fellow shop stewards and ABWU members to take advantage of the Union’s educational support, she added: “Education broadens your scope and makes you more marketable.”
Ambrose expresses gratitude to the ABWU for its support and emphasizes the significance of the financial assistance. “It was very timely, given the current economic circumstances. It also shows that the ABWU is genuinely invested in the growth and development of its members.” Excited for this next chapter, Ambrose looks forward to applying her new knowledge to her current role and future career opportunities.
