A report has been made of failure by breach of Rules of the Airport Security Department, where individuals unqualified to operate in the restricted spaces of the airport, have been able to acquire Security Passes under irregular circumstances. What should be understood is that restricted areas of International airports are considered the most risk averse areas, and for this reason in the developed world, approval for the use of an Airport Security Pass is harder than even acquiring a passport.

There are Permanent Secretaries and other appropriate Government Senior officers have been kept waiting for their (entitled)Airport Security Passes, some for over one year while vague excuses are being given. Whereas the chosen persons of people in power flash their Security Passes as they pass through the airport on their personal affairs.
Safety & Security are the principal nexus in aviation, and Rules & Regulations outline the methodology used to ensure their balance in aviation. After several years of Rules & Regulations being ignored and utilized for self-enrichment schemes, those persons placed in charge of the people’s assets need to be replaced. VCBIA Security mess is clearly beyond the capability of a one-man or one-woman overhaul.
A professional from our more developed sister island Trinidad, and who has previously been a CEO of a smaller airport has been invited to clean up the mess in which we have found ourselves in 2024. As a retired person whose last engagement was in the education of Airport Operations, the usefulness of this professional should be in helping the Government in finding the appropriate team of professional aviators to overhaul VCBIA. This clearly cannot be solved by a single person.
The fact that after almost three months, the VCBIA and it’s Board has not seen it fit to introduce the CEO to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation, who happens to be the Chairman of VCBIA Security Committee, or most importantly the Coordinator, all establish the absence of courtesy at at the management level of our our International Airport. Customer Service is at an abysmal low in all departments as those in charge continue to hide behind bureaucracy.

Breaches of Airport Security cannot be allowed to continue while the management considers an investigation. This sort of violation requires immediate action re discovery, and closure of the fault. Rules & Regulations have become power tools to restrict some legitimate persons and businesses, and to extend favours to those who can afford to reward officers. As the Chief of Staff has explained, some Government Officers refuse to follow the directives of Cabinet, implementing their own decisions, and normalizing violations.
