Sheriff Construction Inc. lone firm to bid for Kamarang Hospital project Sep 22, 2024 News Kaieteur News – Guyanese construction firm, Sheriff Construction Inc. was the lone bidder to submit its financial and technical proposal for the construction of the Kamarang Hospital in Region Seven. This is according to information released by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office recently on its website. The government of Guyana through the Ministry of Health issued a tender seeking bids to “design and build” the hospital. In its tender document, the ministry stated that the Guyana Government has received financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) towards the cost of the ‘Health Care Network Strengthening in Guyana’, and intends to apply part of the proceeds towards the project. Kaieteur News understands that the Kamarang Hospital is expected to provide services of a level four hospital. The hospital project which forms part of the government’s vision of providing a world-class healthcare to the citizens is set to offer services such as X—rays, CT scans, testing, and ultrasound among others. It was reported that the US$97 million IDB loan Guyana secured in 2022 will be used to improve the health of the Guyanese population through increased access, quality, and efficiency of health services by improving health outcomes associated with low and high complexity procedures. This will be done by expanding the capacity of strategic hospitals, by extending coverage of diagnostic, medical consultation, and patient management services, inclusive of the country’s hinterlands, through digital health; and by increasing the efficiency of the public health system, by strengthening key logistic, management, and support processes and inputs. The project is also expected to target infrastructure improvement and expansion in seven priority hospitals, namely the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital (NARH) and the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC), as well as four District Hospitals located in the hinterland (Moruca, Kamarang, Kato, and Lethem). Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali  met with His Majesty King Charles III in Scotland last week where the two held discussions concerning Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 Vision among other priorities. In a release from the Office of the President (OP) on Saturday, it stated that in a series of high-level engagements facilitated by the King’s Foundation, the Head of State visited Scotland where he further advanced the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030 agenda. The visit comes after the King’s Foundation’s recent engagements in Guyana and President Ali’s recent announcement where he said that the Foundation would support the next phase of the LCDS, with a particular focus on sustainable urban development. “His Excellency held a private, one-on-one meeting with His Majesty King Charles III, where they discussed their shared commitment to climate resilience, sustainable development, agriculture, and community-driven initiatives supporting vulnerable populations,” the Office of the President reported. Speaking about that meeting with the King, President Ali related that the two spoke at length about their shared view for the world on the importance of cutting-edge sustainable development solutions. “The King has been a long-term supporter of Guyana’s LCDS, which he has highlighted as a global example since it was launched in 2009. I am optimistic that we will work together as partners in the years ahead, especially with the new LCDS priorities – including sustainable urban development, biodiversity, and water management,” President Ali reported. Reflecting on his visit also, the President mentioned that he believes there is a lot to learn from each other, and that Guyana can be an example for the Commonwealth on our new priorities, just as the country has been an example on forests for the past 15 years. According to the OP, the Head of State had dinner with the King where he (President Ali) highlighted Guyana’s and the King’s Foundation’s work across the Commonwealth, including when they will meet next at Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in a few weeks’ time. During his visit, the President was able to tour facilities that provide critical support to local and vulnerable populations across Scotland. This included programs for unemployed youth, students, and individuals facing health challenges.  Through this meeting, the President was able to focus on areas of education, innovation, and sustainability, and reflecting Guyana’s commitment to an inclusive and low-carbon future. The Office of the President highlighted that the President toured STEM Workshops, Regenerative Agriculture Centre, Housing Initiatives, Green Space Urban Planning, and Textiles Workshops. One can achieve anything at any age and this in the case of Destiny Wade who at just 15-years-old is the proud founder and owner of a crochet business called ‘Threaded Treasures by Destiny’. Hailing from the county of Berbice, Wade officially launched her business on December 21st, 2023. Not only is she a young entrepreneur but Wade is currently a student at President’s College. In an exclusive interview with The Waterfalls, the teen revealed that from a young age, she has always had a deep passion for arts and crafts, with crochet being a particular favourite of hers. “I grew up as a DIY enthusiast, always seeking creative outlets. My entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on; in Grade 3, I began making rubber band bracelets and selling them to my classmates. At just 8-years-old, I received a kiddy sewing machine from my mother, that I used to create outfits for my dolls,” Wade related. When questioned what sparked her interest to launch this venture, the teen said back in 2020, after completing her NGSA examination, she was inspired by a YouTuber who had recently started her own crochet business. “I’ve always had a passion for arts and crafts, so crochet naturally sparked my interest. Initially, I used mask straps and knotted them together to make yarn, because nowhere in Berbice sold yarn and my mother borrowed a crochet hook from a friend, and that’s when I truly began my crochet journey at 11 years old,” she recalled. The young woman stated that initially, she was apprehensive about launching her business noting that fear held her back from taking that crucial step. “However, now that I have started, I can confidently say there isn’t a bone in me that regrets it—in fact, I wish I had launched it earlier,” she expressed. For those who have not heard of ‘Threaded Treasures by Destiny’, it is a small business which offers handmade crochet items, including bags, hats for male and female, bath suits, skirts, dresses, key chains, scrunchies, baby outfits, purses, socks and much more. Wade said having been operating for a while, there are times when it does not all go her way. She explained that since she launched, one of the major challenge she had to deal with has been balancing her business with her personal and academic life. “Time management was crucial, as I had to ensure my studies weren’t compromised while growing my business. Another challenge was sourcing high-quality materials, as they aren’t always readily available locally,” she mentioned. She added that in overcoming these challenges she set a structured schedule that allowed her to dedicate time to both studies and her crochet work. “Prioritizing tasks and setting realistic goals each week helped me stay on track. For sourcing materials, I would research reputable online retailers that specialize in yarn and crochet materials. Websites like Etsy, Amazon, or dedicated craft stores often have a wide selection,” she elaborated. Accepting and learning from the obstacles along this journey, Wade said on the brighter side of things the support towards her and the business has been nothing less than incredible. She stated that her family, especially her mother and aunts, have played a significant role in encouraging and helping her grow her business. She noted too that the encouragement she received from my teachers has also been invaluable. According to her, recently she had the opportunity to showcase her work at her first exhibition – Curl Fete 2024, which she described, was an exciting milestone in her entrepreneurial journey. Remembering the earlier stage of her business, she said that her first customers came from dorm mates, “and I have been pleasantly surprised to connect with customers from places in Guyana I never expected, such as Kwakwani, Linden, and New Amsterdam.” Noting that this is remarkable experience, Wade revealed, “As l’ve embarked on this entrepreneurial journey, I have observed significant personal growth. This experience has not only matured me mentally but has also shaped my personality in meaningful ways.” With this being said, she mentioned that to anyone out there who is considering starting a business but feels scared, her advice to them is to pray about it. “Remember, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ Do not pay attention to the negative comments or energy you may encounter from others. You have the potential to succeed!” she expressed. Looking forward to the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead for her business, the young entrepreneur told this magazine that the long-term goal for her business is to expand and offer international shipping, particularly to other Caribbean countries. This week, the Director of UAE, Kelton Jennings told The Waterfalls the group’s most recent activity was to host a delegation of cultural performers from Suriname who are here in Guyana to take part in a cultural exchange programme during the Amerindian Hertiage month. “We have 55 persons from Suriname who are in Guyana to share our experiences and for us to learn from them as well. The delegation consists of persons from the    indigenous, Japanese and India, The Surinamese Participants are from groups School Voor Jong Talent Suriname, Satrangi, Sekarin Renonce, Paremuru and Uma Dron.,” Jenning revealed. The Director noted that the Suriname delegation of dancers and drummers led by Tanuya Manichand have so far, had culturally informative and enriching experiences. He told this publication that Unique Arts Entertainment was launched under the Caribbean Cultural Exchange (CCE) which provides opportunities for entertainers across the Caribbean to showcase their ability through the performing arts. Jennings explained“…From 2022 to 2024 successfully, we took fifty persons from Guyana to Suriname conducting workshops and showcasing our African culture on Emancipation Day in Suriname, twenty-seven performers from Guyana to Jamaica to work and earn through the Caribbean Single Market and Economy [CSME] on a two-year programme. The hope is to create a cultural awakening, consciousness and mutual appreciation among our people who are still clearing away the debris of our history,” According to Jennings, the group has more than 13 years of experience in producing cultural showpieces and dance productions. The Surinamese group after they arrived in Guyana and received a warm welcome from the team at NCN news He explained that in July-August 2019, UAE was invited by the Ambassador for Suriname to Guyana, Mr.  Ebu Jones, and the Director of Culture Suriname, Ms. Elvira Sandi, for a cultural exchange, where 30 performers came to Suriname for Emancipation Day and a delegation of 80+ Surinamese performers came to Guyana for Emancipation Day. “The shows and workshops were held at different venues and were very well received. The group was established in 2007 and officially registered in 2009. We are Purpose of the visit this organization believes that a cultural sharing through collaboration can enhance the quality and variety of cultural expression by continuous exposure to new perspectives and experiences.” “In doing so, UAE is hoping to develop an international collaboration with other Caricom countries to showcase our homogeneity as well as our rich diversity, continuing to embark on the cultural journey through the Caribbean Single Market and Economy programme,” he said He said “We have travelled to Suriname, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, and just recently the USA as part of quest to preserve cultural experiences. We have a complement of 100 performers which includes dancers, poets, singers, and actors… All of the productions are being done under the name Kaya—which means home in Africa” “We are one of the few cultural companies that has a full roster of satisfied clientele including National Communications Network (NCN), International Organization for Migration (IOM), African Culture and Development Association (ACDA), Republic Bank Guyana, CARICOM, University of Guyana (UG), Marriott Hotel and the Ministry of Social Protection – Trafficking-in-Persons unit (TIP Unit), just to name a few.” Additionally, the group recently collaborated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and completed a movie titled “Painting the Picture”.
