Archery: Team Guyana arrives for 6th Caribbean Development Championships Sep 22, 2024 Sports Team Guyana took a photo op in Jamaica ahead of the Championships. Kaieteur Sports – Archery Guyana announced that Team Guyana safely arrived to participate in the 6th Caribbean Development Championships, which will be held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, from July 10th to July 14th, 2024. This prestigious event, while focusing on development in the Caribbean, will also see participation from national federations across the Americas, under the auspices of World Archery Americas. Representing Guyana at this international event are archers from various affiliate members of the National Federation in Guyana, showcasing their skills in both the recurve (R) and barebow (BB) categories across different age groups and experience levels. The athletes representing Guyana include: Senior Women (Barebow – Beginner) – Juanita Persaud, Melesa Ramnaraine & Naudia Maraj, Senior Men (Barebow – Beginner) – Mehandra Chatargum & Gregory McKoy, Senior Men (Recurve – Beginner) – Faraad Gani & Afzal Karim, Under-15 Women (Barebow – Development) – Fatima Gani, Under-18 Women (Barebow – Development) – Nataliya Pollard, Under-15 Men (Barebow – Development) – Alec Simmons & Saifullah Gani, Senior Men (Barebow – Development) – Teemahall Lall & Richard Dookie, Senior Women (Recurve – Development) – Roshini Boodhoo, Theresa Jaikishun, Julie-Ann Williams & Karin Toppin, Senior Men (Recurve – Development) – Jeewanram Persaud & Saeed Karim. These archers, representing a blend of experienced and up-and-coming talent, have demonstrated their dedication and commitment through rigorous training in preparation for this competition. Environmental Protection extends activities to oil and gas industry Sep 22, 2024 Consumer Concerns, Features / Columnists, News CONSUMER CONCERNS PAT  DIAL Kaieteur News – Consumers have often been alarmed by persons in the media predicting disasters which will befall Guyana and Guyanese people if there is an Oil Spill and by the claim that no Environmental Regulations are being imposed on the Industry resulting in damage being done to the Environment.  These ‘defenders of the Environment’ claim that the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is merely engaged in routine work. The Environment consists of the Air, Land and Water of the Planet.  In more detailed terms this will be  the Atmosphere which envelopes the Planet and which consists of  layers of various life-sustaining gases  such as hydrogen, oxygen and most importantly, the Ozone Layer which absorbs the Sun’s Ultraviolet Rays which would be fatal to all human and animal life if exposed to it.  Next, there is the Hydrosphere which is the total water on the Planet which consists of the Oceans, polar ice caps, rivers, lakes, ground water and clouds.  The Oceans form 97% of the Planet’s water with only 3% fresh water with 1% polluted leaving only 2% for human and animal use and this fact underscores the importance of using fresh water economically.  Then there is the Lithosphere which consists of earth such as mountains and plains and the minerals within the earth.  On the earth is the Biosphere which consists of all living things such as plant and animal and human life including other things like corals. All Life uses all three spheres. These spheres interact with each other and human and other life interacts with them.  Environmental Studies and Ecology try to regulate human activity from harming these spheres which could result in permanent harm affecting future generations.  Thus, for example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has had to regulate the construction of main roads, the Berbice and Demerara River Bridges and the construction of sizable buildings like various international hotels.  In rare cases the EPA may have to balance the requirements of Development with those of Ecology.  One of the main activities of the EPA is the struggle against Climate Change where the EPA has to limit or eliminate the effusion of Carbon Dioxide into the Atmosphere.   This activity is multi-dimensional and involves protection of the Forests, the elimination of the use of fossil fuels and the exploration of the production and use of clean fuels such as hydropower.  It is therefore quite clear that the EPA’s work in the non-Oil sector is substantial. The EPA’s work in the Oil Sector is far less known but it is important.  We first mention the Oil Cats which could seal wells in the event of a spill.  Most producers rent such equipment when it is needed; Guyana has decided to invest several million US dollars in acquiring Cats to ensure that in the event of an Oil Spill, immediate action could be taken.  The EPA, in licensing the producer, necessitates the presence of a Capping Stack – a subsea mechanical barrier designed to effectively shut in and redirect uncontrolled flow.  Further, for the Stabroek Block operator ExxonMobil and its partners have made a $2 billion oil spill guarantee. Oil leaks could be detected by the use of independent satellite monitoring which would immediately detect any sheen in the ocean.  On the Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, discharges which may be of environmental concern are monitored by the Monitoring, Recording, and Verification System (MRVS).  This System has the added spinoff of monitoring the quantum of Oil being extracted by ExxonMobil. Flaring is one of the environmental hazards of Oil production.  Flaring is the controlled burning of natural gas which prevents buildups that could lead to explosions.  Flaring is a safety measure but it is not an ideal solution.  The producers are permitted an amount of flaring which is considered environmentally acceptable but beyond this they have to pay a fine of US$50 per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent for flaring on their FPSO’s. Although the existing systems effectively monitor off-shore activities, e.g. on the FPSO’s, there is room for strengthening capabilities.  Vice President and General Secretary of the PPP Bharrat Jagdeo who is the country’s front man in relating to the Oil Industry, recently remarked “We need to continue building capacity at the EPA and in Government itself, independent capacity, and with government itself to do greater monitoring”. Accordingly, there is at present fairly adequate environmental protection vis-a-vis the Oil Industry but the EPA is working towards perfection.  The consumer community and the general public, therefore, need not be alarmed. This revision offers crucial guidance to manufacturers desirous of maintaining the authenticity, quality, and safety of the beloved spice blend. The standard ensures that the curry powder is free from harmful substances such as lead and cadmium, while setting limits on moisture content, ash, and volatile oils, all of which play a role in the product’s shelf life and flavor retention. The revision highlights the importance of safeguarding food quality in Guyana as it brings the standard in line with current global practices. The GNBS, which has adopted and developed over 600 standards, continuously works to ensure that industries across various sectors, including the food industry, have access to relevant, modern standards that meet international benchmarks. By implementing standards like GYS 29:2024, businesses are better equipped to compete globally, protect consumers, and maintain consistent quality in production. The standard’s revision also includes updated requirements for proper packaging and labelling. South American Men’s Classic Powerlifting Championships… – Minister Ramson extends congratulations Kaieteur Sports – Naranjan Singh, a 79-year-old powerlifter representing Guyana, continues to make his mark on the international stage, securing the country’s only gold medal at the ongoing South American Women’s and Men’s Classic Powerlifting Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Competing in the Masters 4 division, the USA-based Singh not only captured gold but also shattered the South American Masters 4 deadlift record with a lift of 120.5kg, surpassing the previous record of 120.0kg, which had stood since 2017. Singh, who turns 80 on October 20th, had already impressed with a best squat of 87.5kg and a bench press of 77.5kg, culminating in a total of 285.5kg. In the Open division, Kheon Evans also represented Guyana in the 83kg category. Unfortunately, Evans was unable to continue in the competition after failing to register any successful bench press attempt at 140kg. He faced difficulties in the squat as well, completing his first attempt at 235.0kg but missed the following two at 242.5kg. Despite these challenges, Guyana will conclude the championships today with a total of five medals. Sarah Sanmoogan secured four bronze medals on Wednesday across all three lifts and the total in the Female Junior 69kg category. Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Charles S. Ramson MP, extended his congratulations to Singh on behalf of the people and Government of Guyana. The Guyana Fashion Showcase promises to be a spectacular event, combining local talent with international flair in a celebration of style and culture. The event will take place at the National Gallery of Art, Castellani House in Georgetown. The theme for this year’s showcase, “Style with Beauty in the Rainforest,” reflects Guyana’s lush and colorful natural beauty. The official announcement of the event was made at a press conference held on August 2, 2024, at Colabs Guyana Inc. The conference was hosted by Philbert Giddings, CEO and Founder of GFS; Michelle Cole Wagner, international designer and head of COLEFACTS; and Sharminah Leah, international actress and model. Speaking with Kaieteur News about the upcoming event, Giddings shared his journey in the fashion world. Giddings, who has a background in construction and promotion, has been active in the industry for decades and has built relationships with top designers such as Francis Henry. He explained: “I came back to Guyana from New York in 2017 after seeing the carnival and the potential for fashion here. I decided to invest in rebuilding and promoting fashion in Guyana.” Designer, Michelle Cole Wagner shared that the selection of the models have been finalised.  She explained that at the first model casting for the showcase, held on August 2, saw over 50 local participants, and the final selection process concluding on September 7. Out of this group, 38 local models were chosen, alongside additional international models. Cole Wagner emphasized the diversity in this year’s selection, stating, “We aim to present real models of various sizes, moving beyond the traditional size 2. This year, we are including models up to size 16 to reflect a broader range of beauty.” Cole Wagner emphasized the significance of this year’s event, saying, “With this being the final year for CPL cricket, it’s the perfect moment to showcase Guyanese fashion. I hope this event will garner support from the local community. We have prepared a special stage for you all.” Giddings concluded with high expectations for the event, stating, “We are looking forward to a night filled with total ambience and couture fashion.” Sharminah Leah, who joined the team for this event, expressed her excitement about participating. She asserted “My dad is Guyanese, so I’ve always wanted to visit.
