APNU worried about PNCR’s desertion

APNU worried about PNCR’s desertion Aug 09, 2024 News – says being forced to make decisions without Norton Kaieteur News – The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) opposition has said that it has been forced to make some critical decisions without the input of representatives of its major coalition partner, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR). In a statement on Thursday, APNU said it met on June 6, 2024 and deliberated on the major issue of no meetings being held since January 25, 2022. The party said it was forced to make the decisions since its stagnation for over two years needed to be rectified. According to APNU, the Executive Committee members inter alia agreed on June 6th 2024 that a new Chairman and General Secretary be elected for a period of six months or until consensus is reached on an alternative way forward.  “The Executives then elected Mr. Vincent Henry, MP to the position of Chair and Mrs. Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, MP to the position of General Secretary. Since those elections, two other Executive Meetings were held of which all Executive Members were invited,” the statement continued. The grouping said that neither Mr. Aubrey Norton nor a representative of the PNCR attended any of the three executive committee meetings held on June 6, 2024; July 15, 2024; and July 29th, 2024. The APNU stressed however, that it must be noted that the People’s National Congress Reform is an integral part of the APNU and “as we continue to prepare for the 2025 elections, we hope that the PNCR would find it necessary and important to attend meetings when those meetings are called.” Among the other decisions taken are that the APNU Executive shall meet at least once per quarter or more frequently if deemed necessary, to deliberate on any and all matters pertaining to the partnership; each Executive in the partnership is entitled to one vote on any matter that cannot be decided on by consensus; the chairman will have a casting vote; the Chair is to be elected for a term of one year. Additionally, the party said that there shall be no term limits and the election of chair shall be held on a date to be determined in the first month of each New Year.  As a result, the party revealed that a Standard Operating Procedure/ Document titled “Responsibilities and duties of the Chair” will be prepared and signed by anyone who becomes Chair of the APNU. Further, the APNU said that its composition will now consist of the Executive Committee, Associate Members and Individual Members’ components. Related Similar Articles

USAID and PAHO join forces to help Guyana eliminate filariasis

USAID and PAHO join forces to help Guyana eliminate filariasis Aug 09, 2024 News Workers of the Ministry of Health administering Lymphatic Filariasis pills Kaieteur News – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) announce the next step in their long-standing partnership aimed at helping Guyana’s Ministry of Health eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) as a public health concern. This collaboration is a significant milestone towards improving the health and well-being of Guyanese citizens and underscores the commitment of these organizations to combating tropical diseases in the region, the US Embassy here said in a press release. From 2017 to now, USAID has supported the elimination of LF in Guyana with more than $3.5 million to PAHO to assist the Ministry of Health in Guyana to strengthen the national LF elimination program.  LF, commonly known as ‘elephantiasis,’ is a painful and profoundly disfiguring disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes.  Despite significant progress in controlling LF globally, it remains a health risk for 500,000 citizens.  The disease can be eliminated with a simultaneous mass drug administration to all people living in endemic areas.  The latest round took place in Regions 3 and 4.  Guyana has already successfully eliminated LF in all other administrative regions. U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot commented, “The U.S. Government, through USAID, is proud to partner with PAHO and the Government of Guyana in this crucial initiative that will truly save lives. Together, we will leverage our collective strengths to achieve a future free of LF for all Guyanese citizens.” This initiative aligns with the broader goals of USAID and PAHO to promote health equity and access to quality healthcare for all.  By eliminating the burden of LF, the partnership aims to reduce health disparities and empower communities to lead healthier, more productive lives.
