Baby who died at daycare suffocated – PM reveals Jul 04, 2024 News Kaieteur News – An autopsy on Wednesday has revealed that the three month-old Kyrie Nelson died from “Suffocation”. Dead, Kyrie Nelson Nelson was reportedly found motionless around 12:00 hrs. on Friday last in a cradle at a day-care located in Kaneville, East Bank Demerara (EBD). He was later pronounced dead by doctors after being rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. Police investigations had revealed, Nelson was found motionless by one of the two teachers on duty, with his face down on a pillow in the cradle at the day care. It was noted too that when they found him he was bleeding from his nostrils. The teachers reportedly washed the blood from the baby’s face in the kitchen area and tried reviving him but to no avail. The child’s mother was then informed and he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Following his death, the baby’s mother told police that she took him to the day care around 08:00hrs on Friday and handed him over to one of the teachers before leaving for work. That teacher confirmed that she did receive the child alive and fed him some porridge around 09:00hrs. At around 11:00hrs, she placed him to lie down in the cradle and left him to attend to another child. It was about an hour later when the teacher discovered the child motionless. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security also conducted its own investigation and found that the day care was not licensed to operate at the time. According to the ministry, its license was expired since 2020.   “The last documents issued to Mya’s Daycare, for renewing the Child Care Licence was February 7, 2020,” the ministry had stated before adding that checks made during post COVID-19 revealed that the facility was closed. The owner, a woman currently on vacation in the United States of America (USA), is a registered caregiver with the Child Care and Protection Agency (CP&A) but had repeatedly reported that the daycare has been closed since 2020. “However, investigations revealed that the woman’s granddaughter opened a child care facility illegally on the 2nd of January 2024 unknown to the Child Care and Protection Agency,” the ministry said in a statement before further revealing that no documentation or assessment was ever made for the “illegal facility by the Child Care and Protection Agency’s Early Childhood Development Services Unit”. Alleged Stabroek chain snatcher nabbed wearing stolen jewellery Jul 04, 2024 News Kaieteur News – An alleged chain snatcher from the Stabroek Market Area, Georgetown was remanded to prison five days after he was caught by police wearing the stolen gold chain. Police identified him as Simon Shepherd, 27, and he was denied bail on Wednesday after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate, Faith McGusty. He was charged with one count of simple larceny and two counts of larceny in person. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded until July 16, 2024. Shepherd was reportedly captured by police around 19:00 hrs. on Saturday wearing a $45,000 gold chain which was snatched from Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) tax officer, Tiffany Morris, earlier that day. Morris told police that she was standing on Croal Street, waiting on a minibus when she felt someone pulling her chain from her neck. The tax officer alleged that when she turned around she saw that it was the accused dressed in a black T-shirt, a white cap and a pair of short pants. She reported the matter to police and he was nabbed later in the evening allegedly wearing the same clothes and her chain. Shepherd is also accused of snatching another woman’s chain worth $67,000 two days earlier along Republic Avenue and breaking into a stall on June 14 last with an accomplice, stealing some 50 chains worth a total value of $1.5 million. On June 27, a woman identified as Marcia Carroll reported to police that at around 10:35 hrs. that day she was walking in a northern direction when a man walked up to her from the opposite direction and snatched her twenty-six pennyweight gold chain from around her neck before making good his escape. Police during their investigation reviewed footage from CCTV cameras close-by and alleged that Shepherd was the one seen snatching the chain. Police alleged too that he was again seen on CCTV Camera footage entering a man’s Stabroek Market Jewellery stall on June 14 in the company of an accomplice. They broke one of the glass cases and cart off wih 50 gold chains. According to reports, the stall owner had left the stall unattended for a short while to carry food for his wife who was in another stall close by. He recalled hearing someone raising the alarm that “them just break a stall” and two men running past him. When the stall holder returned he saw that it was his stall they had broken into. Man granted $150k bail after attempting to steal air conditioners and copper wires Jul 04, 2024 Court Stories, Features / Columnists, News Kaieteur News – A 53 year-old man of Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was placed on $150,000 bail for allegedly stealing two Grey Air Conditioning (A/C) units valued at $300,000 and a quantity of copper metal wires valued at $1,500,000, the total value being $1.8 million. The defendant, Owen Barker appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court #5 before Magistrate Faith McGusty to answer to the charge of Break and Enter and Larceny. The items stolen were the property of the V/C, Peter Daby. The charge states that Barker, on June 29, 2024 at about 12:15h, on Sheriff Street Campbellville, Georgetown stole two air conditioners and a quantity of copper wires valued at a total of 1.8 million. According to the prosecutor, Barker was seen by the watchman of Daby’s residence, trying to steal the items mentioned. When the man was spotted, the watchman shouted at him, which caused Barker to run away from the scene. The watchman attempted to run after him; however he could not catch up to him. However the man was apprehended by public spirited persons. Barker was later arrested by police. The man was represented by attorney at law, Patrice Henry. His attorney requested bail in a reasonable sum. There was no objection to bail by the prosecutor. Bail was granted in the sum of $150,000 by Magistrate McGusty and Barker is scheduled to appear in court on July 12, 2024. Related Similar Articles

Ending teacher’s strike was not a solely executive decision – Dr. Lyte Jul 04, 2024 News President of the GTU, Dr. Mark Lyte Kaieteur News – President of the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) Dr. Mark Lyte said on Wednesday that the decision to end the strike was not solely taken by the executive body. Dr. Lyte in a live stream via the Union’s Facebook page stressed that a decision to either take, or call off an industrial action does not rest on the voice of a few but rather that of the masses. “Whenever a decision is taken to have industrial action or to call off an industrial action it does not rest on the voice of the few. It rests on the voice of the majority and from where I sat and what I heard. The feedback I got to the meetings that were convened I recognized that the voice for the strike to come to an end was resounding from the masses,” he said Furthermore, “So the action that was taken to bring an end to the strike was not a solely executive decision. It was a decision where we listened to all of our members in all the counties. We heard what they had to say their concerns were raised and we used the opportunity to address those concerns in a very amicable way.” According to the GTU President, numerous concerns were taken to the General Council, Officers and Executive Council, hence it was a collective and inclusive constitutional decision taken on the behalf of the general membership after listening extensively to them. Noting that the decision made some persons unhappy as they would have preferred to sit it out, Lyte explained that the union always had a listening executive that is interested in the welfare of its members hence the decision was taken to return back to the classroom. “We returned to the Ministry of Labor with a view to come up with the amicable resolution. What we did was to hear from the rank and file members what their desire or wishes are and having heard from those rank and file members, we were able to gain the support of general council and the decision was taken as to the way forward,” he added. It was reported last month that the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) is prepared to meet with the Government through the August holiday period to hammer out teachers’ pay issues. Speaking to Kaieteur News, General Secretary of the GTU, Coretta Mc Donald explained that while the pay issues remain top of the agenda, the Union will soon be meeting with Ministry officials to figure out the terms of resumption. She noted that “The GTU/Ministry of Labour is exchanging documents on the terms of resumption for teachers to return to the classroom. We are also in discussion with the teachers on strike to ensure that teachers are present in their respective school before schools go on its August break.” The GTU General Secretary said that the union is also working its new proposal which will be presented to the Ministry of Education after the terms of resumption are agreed upon. “So we have the new proposal but it will only be presented the Ministry of Education after we agree on the terms of resumption.” Mc Donald explained. She noted that in the meantime she said that the impact of the strike has been felt significantly across the country. “In terms of participation in the strike we saw like an 80 percent of teachers in Region Four who did not work, 80 percent in Region 10, Regions Two, Three, Five and Six were below the 50 percent mark because as you know these are the regions that are influenced more politically… but we saw an overall significant participation,” she said. Uncle Sam hat! Is like dem forget where dem come from. Guyana independence? Nah, that ain’t important. May 26th? Who cares? But when July 4th come, dem ready. Dem ready more than the Americans. Dem boys seh, how come? How come we own independence don’t get the same energy? When Guyana get freedom, dem too busy. But for Uncle Sam, dem got time.  Dem got money for big party. For Guyana independence, dem too broke. But for America? Dem find the money. Dem boys seh is funny. Some people only patriotic for other country. Like Guyana not good enough. But dem forget, without Guyana, dem won’t have anything to celebrate. No cassava bread. No pepperpot. No sweet Guyanese accent. But today, dem talking like dem from Texas. They secured an opening 2-1 win against St. Vincent’s Ciara George and Nadira Morgan before falling to Jamaicans Elle Wilson and Sanjana Nallapati in the Girls Doubles event, ultimately securing another bronze medal for Team Guyana. With nine medals already in their possession at the 2024 championships, the Guyanese team aim to expand their medal tally further in the Doubles and Mixed Doubles phases of the tournament. In the opening match of the Doubles category, the confident Sumner and Lowe showcased their resilience and skill.
