Greenidge wins Malta Supreme Chess Grand Prix 4 Jul 04, 2024 Sports Scenes from Matla Supreme Chess Grand Prix 4. – as series wraps up Kaieteur Sports – The fourth leg of the tournament series was staged at the David Rose Special School, Thomas Lands. Seasoned player (CM) Ronuel Greenidge edged out his competition to take the lead with 6.5 points as the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) concluded the first half of the Malta – Supreme sponsored Chess Grand Prix 4 eight-round event. The 4-part Grand Prix are regular standalone tournaments that make up the Grand Prix series played periodically from January to June 2024. The second to fourth positions in the competition were determined by the tiebreak systems in place. In second place is seasoned player Loris Nathoo with 6 points, and the third place went to Sachin Pitamber with 6 points. The fourth position went to Ethan Lee, also with 6 points. The fifth placement went to Alexander Zhang with 4.5 points. The sixth and seventh positions went to Alek Ubaldo-Singh and Aditi Joshi, who finished with 4 points each. Nicholas Zhang, Prince Dunn, and Treskole Archibald came in eighth, ninth, and tenth, with 4 points each. GRAND PRIX 4 Highlights: The Zhang brothers, Alexander and Nicholas, played in the tournament and obtained mixed results. Alexander successfully drew his match with tournament winner Ronuel Greenidge in Round Seven. But a final-round struggle between the experienced Greenidge and the youthful sibling Nicholas ended in a loss for the young player. Both opponents began pushing their singular passed pawns for promotion to powerful queens, but Zhang was forced to give up his valuable Knight to stop Greenidge’s menacing pawn. Zhang’s attempt to also ‘queen’ his pawn failed after Greenidge successfully captured the far-advanced foot soldier with his Bishop in a double attack. His opponent conceded defeat on move 41. Ronuel Greenidge receives prize from FIDE Arbiter John Lee. Pitamber’s encounter with Alexander Zhang in the same round ended on move 39 after Pitamber secured a winning position over his opponent. Pitamber was on the verge of capturing Zhang’s Bishop, and his opponent resigned, realizing the loss of material and the weaker position. Pitamber’s earlier match with Loris Nathoo ended in a draw after only 24 moves, and the players settled for half a point each. A short presentation ceremony was given at the end of the final round on Sunday, June 30th, to the top three performers. Fourteen-year-old Aditi Joshi copped the best female prize. Top performer points in these series qualify to add to the qualification system for the FIDE 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2024. Seventeen year old benefits from Project “Cricket Gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana” Jul 04, 2024 Sports Troy David proudly displays his cricket shoes. Kaieteur Sports – Troy David, a seventeen year old all rounder from Edinburgh, East Bank, Berbice, is the latest young cricketer to benefit from this joint initiative of Kishan Das of the USA and Anil Beharry of Guyana. David was the recipient of one pair of cricket shoes. The Fraser’s Educational Institute right arm leg spinner and middle order batsman, represents Edinburgh Cricket Club at all levels. At a simple ceremony held recently, he was very thankful for the shoes and promised to work hard on his game. This project continues to support young people and promised David more support as his game grows. He was reminded to balance his education with cricket. We are happy to be associated with the development of cricket especially through young people. Total cricket related items received/purchased so far: $460,000 in cash, thirteen colored cricket uniforms, two trophies, twenty five pairs of cricket shoes, thirty three pairs of batting pads, thirty five cricket bats, thirty pairs of batting gloves, twenty five thigh pads, three pairs of wicket keeping pads, six arm guards, two chest pads, two boxes, twelve cricket bags, six bat rubbers, six helmets, one fiber glass bat, thirteen boxes of white cricket balls and twenty eight footballs. In addition to the above, gear worth more than $600,000 was donated by Sheik Mohamed, former National wicket keeper/batsman. All cash collected is being used to purchase cricket gear requested and not available at the time. To date, seventy seven young players, male and female, from all three counties of Guyana have benefited directly from seven gear bags, two trophies, four arm guards, thirty two bats, three boxes, six helmets, twenty nine pairs of cricket shoes, nineteen pairs of batting pads, twenty four thigh pads, one bat grip, thirty two pairs of batting gloves, one pair of wicketkeeping pads and three pairs of wicketkeeping gloves. Many others benefited indirectly. In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area benefited from two used bats. Pomeroon, Leguan and Wakenam Cricket Committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard also received one box of red cricket balls each, Cold Fusion Cricket Club thirteen color uniforms while RHCCCC received six boxes of balls, fifteen white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket keeping gloves, a set of stumps and bails. Other beneficiaries are The Essequibo Cricket Board, the Town of Lethem, youth coach Travis Persaud (one box of red cricket balls), male and female teams playing the traditional hardball and softball in the Upper Corentyne area, No.65 Young Titans with 30 T-Shirts, youths of Just Try Cricket Club, Wakenaam Cricket Academy (one box of white balls), Shemar Joseph, Nehemiah Hohenkirk, Shamar Apple, Leguan Cricket Committee, Tucber Park Cricket Club and Malteenoes Sports Club (nine cricket balls each). Cricket related items, used or new, are distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent spotting is being done across the country and club leaders also assist to identify same. Progressive and well managed cricket clubs with a youth programme will also benefit. Informative Anti-Doping Seminar conducted by GBA Jul 04, 2024 Sports Dr. Karen Pilgrim Doping Control Officer and the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation-Guyana Rep speaking at yesterday’s seminar. Kaieteur Sports – In an effort to promote the sport of boxing and enhance athletes’ knowledge, Steve Ninvalle, President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), hosted a one-day Anti-Doping Seminar at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Boxing Gym. The event was conducted by Dr. Karen Pilgrim, Doping Control Officer for the Guyana-Regional/Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation, and chaired by GBA Technical Director Terrence Poole. Anti-doping measures were first introduced in sports in 1961 following the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission after the death of a Danish cyclist during the Rome Olympic Games. These measures aim to create a level playing field across all sports disciplines by prohibiting the use of performance-enhancing substances and methods. Over thirty-five boxers from various gyms attended the seminar, which was an interactive and educational programme designed to inform and discuss the intricacies of anti-doping. GBA’s Anti-Doping Seminar concluded yesterday at Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym. Dr. Pilgrim explained the concept of anti-doping, engaged with the boxers present at the event, and detailed the various prohibited substances and methods that could lead to a positive test result. In his closing remarks, Technical Director Poole highlighted the significance of the seminar as a groundbreaking initiative that should be adopted by both local and regional organizations. He stated, “This is the first time the sport of boxing has taken the initiative to host a seminar of this nature. I am pleased to see this group of athletes being given the opportunity to learn about the ‘dos and don’ts’ concerning anti-doping rules and guidelines.” Related Similar Articles

KFC Elite League Season Six Kaieteur Sports – Buxton United FC, rooted at the bottom of the table, endured another defeat, this time against Den Amstel FC, while Western Tigers FC moves up one spot to fifth position with a win over Ann’s Grove United FC in Saturday’s fixtures of Round Two of the KFC Elite League Season Six. In the June 29 matches at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Training Centre in Providence, East Bank Demerara, Den Amstel’s Jahshaun Moore opened the scoring in the 64th minute after a goalless first half. Anthony Benn doubled their advantage in the 80th minute. Despite Inceford Charles pulling one back for Buxton United in the 81st minute, they couldn’t find an equaliser before the final whistle. The evening’s finale saw Andrew Murray net twice for Western Tigers in the 9th and 11th minutes. Ryan Seales grabbed Buxton United’s lone goal in the 22nd minute but was unable to breach Western Tigers’ defence for a second time. As the new month of competition kicks off, the Guyana Defence Force maintains its lead with thirty-one points, having secured ten wins and one draw, alongside an impressive tally of forty-seven goals. Slingerz FC from West Demerara holds onto second place with twenty-nine points, earned from nine wins, two draws and forty-four goals. The Guyana Police Force FC remains in third position with twenty-eight points, having won nine matches, drawn one and lost two in eleven outings. Buxton struggled against Den Amstel during their meeting. Santos FC occupies fourth place with twenty-four points, notching up eight wins and enduring five losses. Western Tigers FC’s recent victory propels them up to fifth place with eighteen points, courtesy of six wins and six losses, while Fruta Conquerors FC slides down to sixth place with sixteen points from five wins, one draw and six losses. Despite a loss over the weekend, Den Amstel FC maintains their grip on seventh place with twelve points, secured from three wins, three draws and seven losses. Ann’s Grove United FC remains in eighth position with eleven points, winning three matches, drawing two and losing eight, closely followed by Monedderlust FC in ninth place with nine points from two wins, three draws and seven losses. Buxton United FC remains at the bottom in tenth place, securing only one point from a solitary draw and suffering twelve losses.
